Toxic Ingredients

Updated: Mar 10, 2020

Did you know that the skin is the largest organ and absorbs 80% of what we put on it. What are you using on your skin and more importantly what does it contain?

In this blog I am going to mention some of the common nasties which should be avoided. The first most common is Sodium Laureth Sulphate- now go to your bathroom cupboard and have a look at your Shampoos, face wash, Body wash, hand wash... I am guessing one of the first ingredients is Sodium Laureth Sulfate or Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. This is the ingredient that makes them nice and foamy but this is creating a lot of other problems in the skin. It has been documented to cause improper eye development in children. Affects protein structures and keeps children’s eyes from developing. Nitrate absorption (as much as eating one pound of bacon with each shampoo) Nitrates are known carcinogenic agents. Penetration into systemic tissues (brain, heart, liver) In absorption, metabolism and exrection studies Sodium Lauryl Sulfate had a degenerative effect on the cell membranes because of its protein denaturing properties. The protective barrier of our skin as well as our structure collagen and elastin are proteins which are being damaged by this nasty. Look out for shortend versions SDS, SLES, SLS. Another very common nasty ingredient is propylene glycol, PEG Propylene glycol is is a petroleum derivative and can easily penetrate the skin causing damage to protein and cellular structure causing irritations. It is the ingredient they use in anti-freeze, brake fluid, floor wax, paints and coatings. Its also surprisingly in Baby wipes, laundry detergents, pet food and some processed food.

Have a look at your products today. If you are unsure about an ingredient look it up or send me the name and I will check it for you. We must be aware of what we are putting into our bodies everyday internally and externally. A list of others to look out for are: mineral oil - causes blackheads, MEA, DEA, TEA- carcinogenic , fragrance (parfum)- irritating , triclosan-hormone disruption, formaldhyde-carcongenic, Methyl, Ethyl & Butyl Parabens- hormone disrupters -contact dermatitis. Hopefully you have some products left in the cupboard after your clear out. Best of luck and I would love to hear your comments below.
